What does the Dresner AI, Data and Analytics Governance Market Study 2026 cover?

The June 15 press release says the study “analyzes end user deployment and sentiment around the governance, including its relative importance, business use cases, governance practices and policies, and solutions support.”

Those four areas map to four questions a governance lead asks:

  • Relative importance. How high governance ranks against other data, analytics and AI priorities.
  • Business use cases. Which work governance supports. The 2026 survey names executive dashboards and KPI reporting, financial planning and analysis, and operational performance monitoring as the top three.
  • Governance practices and policies. How organizations run governance programs.
  • Solutions support. Which technologies organizations use, and what they need from them.

Dresner also defines the subject. In its words, “AI, data, and analytics governance provides the oversight and operating framework of information-related decision rights, principles, policies, processes, people, and technologies that enables an organization to achieve its business objectives.”

The title changed with the scope. The 2024 edition was the Data and Analytics Governance Market Study. The 2026 edition puts AI in the name, and its public summary treats AI and machine learning assets as governed assets alongside data and analytic content.

What did the 2026 study find?

The June 15 press release gives five public findings. Numbers 1, 2 and 4 are survey results. Numbers 3 and 5 are Dresner’s reading of what the results mean for the next few years.

  1. Use cases. Executive dashboards and KPI reporting, financial planning and analysis, and operational performance monitoring are the top three.
  2. Findability. About half of respondents say finding data and analytics content is somewhat difficult. Dresner links the gradual improvement to wider use of AI and enterprise-wide sharing of assets.
  3. Untrusted content. Dresner says much of the content organizations use and share is ungoverned and untrusted, and calls this a significant challenge for the next few years.
  4. Trust. “77% of organizations said the importance of achieving common trust in data, analytics and AI assets to support consistent governance decision making in the organization was either critical or very important.”
  5. Demand. Dresner reads that number as a signal that “the demand for governance technologies and data catalogs with trust model capabilities will likely increase in the future.”

Saul Judah, distinguished analyst at Dresner Advisory, framed the study this way: “Effective governance now must span data, analytic content, artificial intelligence/machine learning assets, including the assets they generate, supported by formal programs, empowered roles, and enabling technologies.” Dresner repeated the quote in its July 2026 newsletter, credited to the 2026 study.

How does Dresner collect the data for the study?

The study is part of Dresner’s Wisdom of Crowds series. The press release says the research “is based on data collected on usage and deployment trends, products, and vendors” and that “Users in all roles and throughout all industries contributed to provide a complete view of realities, plans, and perceptions of the market.”

Three method details are not on any public page we found: the number of respondents, the survey field dates, and the regional split. A buyer who needs them has to ask Dresner.

For other 2026 studies, Dresner has published how it rates vendors. Its 2026 Industry Excellence Awards release says the Business Intelligence and Enterprise Performance Management studies use 33 measures, a Customer Experience model and a Vendor Credibility model, and that “All ratings are driven solely by the voice of the customer.” That release covers BI and EPM only. Whether the governance study uses the same models is not stated publicly.

Does the 2026 study rank governance vendors?

Dresner’s research agenda says of its Wisdom of Crowds market reports: “Each report includes a section with objective and inclusive vendor assessments.” The public abstract of the 2024 edition lists “industry and vendor analysis, and governance vendor ratings” among its sections.

For the 2026 edition, no public placement exists that we could find. The June 15 press release names no vendors. The July 2026 newsletter names none. The 2026 Industry Excellence Awards list only BI and EPM winners. Searches for vendor announcements that cite the 2026 governance study returned none as of October 30, 2026.

So this page ranks no vendors. If a vendor tells you it placed in the 2026 study, ask for the edition year and the model (for example, Customer Experience or Vendor Credibility), and confirm the placement with Dresner.

How has the study changed since the 2024 edition?

The 2024 press release, dated June 17, 2024, reported three numbers:

The 2026 release reports that about half find content “somewhat difficult.” The two releases word it differently, so the public figures do not support a clean year-over-year comparison. The bigger change is in the definition. The 2024 release defined governance as oversight of data and analytic content, although Howard Dresner’s quote in it already called for technology that spans “ML / AI assets.” The 2026 edition puts AI in the title and the definition, and adds the assets that AI and machine learning generate.

Which other 2026 Dresner reports sit next to this study?

Dresner’s research agenda lists several 2026 publications that a governance team would read alongside it:

Publication Date Type
Is the AI, Data, and Analytics Governance Framework You Have the One You Need? Mar 3, 2026 Research Insight
Semantic Layer and Data Virtualization Market Study Report Mar 31, 2026 Market study
Special Report: Data Security and Privacy in 2026 Apr 16, 2026 Special report
Special Report: Data Observability in 2026 May 5, 2026 Special report
Special Report: Data Catalogs in 2026 May 11, 2026 Special report, by Saul Judah
Many Organizations Face a Governance Gap Jul 28, 2026 Research Insight

The Data Catalogs report matters most here, because the governance study itself points to rising demand for catalogs with trust model capabilities.

How does the Dresner study differ from the Gartner Magic Quadrant for governance?

The two answer different questions. Dresner’s study is an end-user survey: it reports what practitioners say about importance, use cases, practices and the tools they use. The Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data and Analytics Governance Platforms is an analyst evaluation that places vendors on two axes, ability to execute and completeness of vision, as summarized in our guide to the 2026 Magic Quadrant.

Read together, the Dresner findings describe the demand side (77% call common trust critical or very important), and the Magic Quadrant describes the supply side.

How should a governance team use the public findings?

Three uses hold up on the public data alone.

Start where the use cases are. Executive dashboards and KPI reporting, financial planning and analysis, and operational performance monitoring make up the 2026 top three, so a governance program that certifies the metrics behind those reports serves the use cases respondents ranked in the top three.

Next, treat trust as a requirement. With 77% rating common trust as critical or very important, ask every tool on a shortlist how it marks an asset as trusted, who approves that mark, and whether AI assets get the same treatment.

Last, govern AI assets with data assets. Dresner’s scope now includes AI and machine learning assets and what they generate. A program that covers tables and dashboards but not models or agent outputs falls short of the scope Dresner describes.

FAQs about the Dresner AI, Data and Analytics Governance Market Study 2026

When was the Dresner AI, Data and Analytics Governance Market Study 2026 published?

Dresner Advisory Services published it on June 15, 2026, through a PR Newswire release dated the same day. Its research agenda lists it as the fourth edition with the status “Published.” The previous edition, the 2024 Data and Analytics Governance Market Study, was announced on June 17, 2024.

Is the full Dresner governance study free to read?

No. The report page sits behind the Dresner client portal login. What anyone can read for free is the June 15, 2026 press release, Dresner’s research agenda entry and the July 2026 client newsletter. We found no public excerpt of the 2026 governance edition as of October 30, 2026.

How many people did Dresner survey for the 2026 governance study?

No public page states the sample size. The press release says only that users in all roles and throughout all industries contributed. Field dates and regional splits are also not public. If a buyer needs these numbers to judge the findings, the route is to ask Dresner directly.

Does the study name Atlan or other governance vendors?

Dresner says each Wisdom of Crowds report includes a vendor assessment section, and the 2024 edition’s abstract lists governance vendor ratings. For 2026, no public Dresner release or vendor announcement we found states any vendor’s placement. Atlan’s placement in the 2026 Dresner study is not public either. This page therefore ranks no vendors. We will update it if a public source states placements.

What is the most quoted number from the 2026 study?

The 77% figure. Dresner reports that 77% of organizations rated achieving common trust in data, analytics and AI assets as critical or very important for consistent governance decisions. Dresner reads this as a signal that demand for governance technologies and data catalogs with trust model capabilities will likely increase.
