About this session

A customer film from 2025. Porto serves more than 18 million customers across insurance, banking, health and services. Its governance team built Datapedia on Atlan so any of its 14,000 employees can find a dataset, its owner and how to request access. Kayo Correa covers the migration and the time saved, and Edson Lopes explains why it had to be multi-cloud.

Narrator

0:01 Founded in 1945, Porto has long been a trusted name in insurance. In the decades since, they've grown, they've evolved. Now with business lines across insurance, banking, health, and services, reaching more than 18 million customers, Porto's top priority is to be present and helpful in every moment of their customers' lives. And it's the job of over 14,000 employees to use data to live up to that promise. At the center of empowering thousands to find, understand, and use data is Porto's governance team, building a tool for every employee to make a data-driven decision. Its name? Datapedia, powered by Atlan.

Kayo Correa

0:49 So the Porto really, really knows that data governance is important. We're trying to help a lot of people to use data. We're leading this path to get in a data-driven culture.

Edson Lopes

1:05 Before Atlan and before all of this, I had this kind of challenge that my decision was I need a tool of data governance that be multi-cloud.

Kayo Correa

1:15 We asked Atlan to do a, a POC, and when we saw all the, the potential of the tool, we're so happy. We're changing our approach to business metadata, not even just the descriptions, but all the, the whole thing related to data. So we had ownership. We can see who is the person and personally who takes care of that data. Or if I had a workflow, I can see who is going to approve that workflow. And this is a business approach. This is how data governance is going to be the key to unlock the doors that business cannot unlock without data governance.

Edson Lopes

2:07 My goal, my objective is I want that Atlan be our encyclopedia of data.

Kayo Correa

2:15 So the first step was comparing the metadata that we had and we're going to have with Atlan. And then we did a full migration in six weeks, and it brings a full ecosystem until today. In 2024, we start with 600 of users, so it's more than double. In 2025 will be the year we are going to double this number.

Edson Lopes

2:48 Datapedia, it's a tool with a big power to create a data community environment.

Kayo Correa

2:56 The cluster helps the, the business to look for their data, but not only their data, the other domain's data. And when you come to a dataset, you have the process how to access their data.

Edson Lopes

3:12 Not only about documentation, but if you have any question, if you wanna know the conceptual model of company, if you wanna learn about one product, your rules your conditions, go to Datapedia.

Kayo Correa

3:30 The main idea for me is the time saving. They're not looking to me. They can do it by themselves. When a new table or a new dataset or a new column goes to Datapedia, it brings automatically the right business unit, the right domain, the right ownership, the right process to access their data. So it saves a lot of time of my team, 40% of efficiency, because we didn't do any process manually anymore. We're helping the business make better decision using data. This is real data culture. We're calling Datapedia like our ecosystem.

4:20 So whatever we, we want in data governance, we're doing using Atlan.

Edson Lopes

4:25 Now we have data governance here in Porto. Before that, we didn't. We found a tool with business concept, not only technical. You have in your hands the power of to create a data community. My first priority now is all the company adopt Datapedia as a main tool. Go to Datapedia, there you will find. All the thing that would you like to learn is there, will be our encyclopedia of Porto.
